Efendys Turkish Restaurant

TURKISH GOES SOUTH...

The evolution of this glorious cuisine was not an accident. Similar to other grand cuisines of the world, it is a result of the combination of three key elements.

Firstly a nurturing environment is irreplaceable. Turkey is known for a diversity of food stuffs due to its rich flora, fauna and regional differentiation and the legacy of an imperial kitchen is inescapable. Secondly, hundreds of cooks specializing in different types of dishes, all eager to please the royal palate, no doubt had their influence in perfecting the cuisine as we know it today and lastly time is of the essence; as it is written, “the religion of the Sultan, in time, becomes that of the people”, which also holds true for the Sultan’s food.

Now just imagine that endless taste right here in Kampala. Whether you are a tourist or a resident to this beautiful country you will always be welcome at Efendy’s. This is especially evident in the atmosphere and preparation of the food served.

The best thing and a definite must as a starter or meal in itself at Efendy’s is the Meze’s - cold starter dips served with Pide bread (like a fluffy pizza base) which is healthy and easy to eat. It comes with an assortment of dips like hummus (Pureed Chickpeas with Sesame oil), Acili Ezme (Diced tomatoes, red pepper paste, parsley and olive oil), Cacik (Finely diced cucumber blended with yoghurt, mint and garlic), Tarama (Yoghurt and fried carrot in chilli sauce), Abugannuc (Grilled aubergine blended with garlic & onions), Dolma (Green pepper stuffed with onions and herbs), Barbunya (Beans in tomato sauce), Haydari (Dry yoghurt with mint) and Suzme Yoghurt (made fresh in the kitchen),

The variety of tasty kebaps served is substantial and these range from the Adana Kebap (Seasoned barbequed minced meat), Kusbasi Kebap (Beef Cubes), Karisik Izgara (Mixed grill of chicken, pirzola, minced meat and beef cubes) to the Cop Sis Kebap (Lamb or Beef with tomato and green pepper). All of the Kebaps are served with rice, chips and salad.
If you are looking for something a little different in the way of Turkish food then try out the brick oven stews (chicken, beef, fish, goat or vegetable). There is also a wide variety of different steaks to choose from and both the steak and the chicken dishes come with a selection of sauces like Pepper steak, Curry Sauce and White Sauce.

If you are not full after Meze and a main meal then you absolutely have to try out the Baklava. This Turkish dessert is made from butter drenched phyllo pastry, spices and chopped nuts. A spiced honey-lemon syrup is poured over the warm pastry after it is baked and allowed to soak into the layers – Yummy!

Turkish Raki or the Mediterranean classic “Ouzo” (Number 12) are a must aperitif to your meal as well as a Turkish coffee to round off your meal and Efendy’s bar is also well stocked with Italian, Spanish and French wines, a variety of beers (both local and imported) and spirits and sodas for in between.

When you feel like chilling out after your meal then wander across to the Secret Garden. Here you will find comfortable couches, a big screen which televises the football, movies which are shown everyday, a pool table and wireless internet. There is a Kindergarten next to Efendy’s for the kids and there is plenty of safe and secure parking space.

So if you fancy something slightly different from continental or Indian, pop in to this little corner of Turkey in Kampala and try some of their mouth-watering dishes – but beware of the garlic!
